Obstacle 1. Whirly Bird.
How you present the obstacle to your pony is very important, you will loose marks for a bad presentation, for example, your pony is behind you, and you are blocking him, and he just ignores the whirly bird.
Before you start, make sure you have your ponies attention, lead him up to the obstacle and "present" it to him. Halt in front of it and indicate to him that you want him to touch it. A confident pony will look at the obstacle and be curious about it and reach out to touch it with his nose. If he is reluctant to look at it, at novice level, you may touch the whirly bird yourself to gain his attention. Once he has touched it, move on from it, and try not to allow him to knock it over in his enthusiasm for touching it !
